Email is rapidly losing its utility as connectivity is being slowly killed by the need for ever more aggressive spam filtering. I'm looking for suggestions for something to replace it long term.
Could the simple addition of some authentication protocols pull us out of the spam trap, or is it too late?

You should take a look at TrulyMail (http://TrulyMail.com). It is an email client but includes it's own 'email replacement' system which is basically a secured private messaging network.
The main benefits are built in encryption (always private), invitation based (no spam), auto-delivery notification.
I use it and love it.
I'm thinking that we might all be forced into using PGP signatures on our email and have our systems trash email that doesn't have them.
